Our History

A little bit about Chalmers Wines

At Chalmers Wines, we are passionate about crafting distinctive Australian wines with an Italian heart. For over three decades, our family has been at the forefront of importing and propagating Italian grape varieties that thrive in Australia's warm, dry climate.

Through tireless experimentation in our nursery, vineyard, and winery, we have honed our sustainable viticultural practices to produce vibrant, elegant wines that showcase the unique character of each variety.

As a tight-knit family operation, Bruce, Jenni, their daughters Kim and Tennille, and Kim's husband Bart van Olphen work together to create wines that embody our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the celebration of Italian grapes in their Australian home.

From our bespoke Merbein winery, we invite you to discover the fruits of our labour and join us on our ever-evolving journey in the world of wine.

Mother Block

The Mother Block wines are the essence of the Chalmers story. They trace our history as growers, then makers, championing Italian varieties that are so suited to our climate, and to our lifestyle. They talk of our red sand and limestone soils and the big sky of our beloved Murray Darling region.

The Chalmers Merbein base, on Njeri Njeri Country, houses the nursery, winery, and precious mother vine material. Acquired in 2010, the vineyard's red sand and limestone soils host grapes for Chalmers wines and supply others. Varieties undergo trials to determine ideal viticultural practices. These trials link to the onsite winery, developing style directions and assessing ideal planting locations. The nursery collection consists of around 50 grape varieties suited to the conditions. Bush vine blocks of Inzolia and Negroamaro, planted like traditional southern Italy, aim for no irrigation through drought-tolerant rootstocks.
